Hey Folks!

This month we have someone who has been very consistent in the gym since Katie was around! With the odd set back, and an odd work schedule, this person has dabbled in all of the hours we offer for working out (constantly varied!) and is consistently working towards mastery of even the fundamental movements. This person is a great example of hard work paying off, as well as approaching your training with a positive attitude. May’s CrossFitter of the Month is…

Occupation: Forest firefighter

What was your exercise experience prior to crossfit?

I grew up as a dancer and competitive wrestler through high school, and at university I was on the Varsity cheerleading team.

How long have you been doing crossfit and why do you choose to crossfit?

I have been doing crossfit on and off for about 3 years now. I started in Waterloo after I graduated because I needed to stay fit for my work. I also wanted to be involved in something more then just a gym. I’ve been completely hooked ever since! One of my favourite things to do while I’m travelling is to attend local crossfit affiliates.

What is your favorite part about crossfit?

The list can go on here! But to start, I love the community- everyone has the best attitude and positive vibes both inside the box and out in real life! No matter what happens that day, or which affiliate I’m at, I always leave with a smile on my face! I love how much I learn at crossfit, such as proper movement and what I can actually do given the right training. Last but not least I love how I am trained to go outside my comfort zone. This definitely applies to everyday life.

What are the accomplishments you are proud of? (Crossfit or non crossfit related)

Well first of all I’m pretty proud I got crossfitter of the month! I’m very proud when I PR any lift; strength training has always been my weakness and it is something I have to work really hard for. I recently PR’d my clean and jerk for the first time in what feels like years! Another cool accomplishment was getting both ring and bar muscle ups! I’ve been having a lot of fun with those lately. I don’t know if this is an accomplishment, but I’m pretty proud of how well I’ve recovered from injuries over the past few years, between my shoulder and my back/hip.

I’m proud of how far I’ve come with fire fighting. I’ve had some pretty awesome opportunities with work, and thanks to crossfit I’m fit enough to do my job! I was also promoted to crew boss this year, which has been a fun experience so far.

Favorite workout or lift?

My favourite lift is the clean and jerk. It’s definitely satisfying getting heavy weight overhead! As for workouts, I love those chippers (Filthy Fifty, Lumberjack.. ), or pretty much any workout that scares me going into it!

Anything else you would like to share please feel free

Thank you guys, athletes and coaches, for being such an awesome group to work with. It’s awesome seeing everyone work so hard and accomplish things they didn’t think possible before crossfit. I look forward to seeing you guys everyday!
